Re: A question about MuseScore that I saw brought up
Let's try to reverse the coin for a moment: would anyone here stop using Dorico or Sibelius (both based in the UK) if the UK started to massacre an ethnic minority inside of their territory or if they invaded, say, Ireland or France? Oh, this is hard to read living in a country that currently refus...

Re: Bar numbers in concert music
I put bar numbers in concert works. Never had a complaint, and have received a few kudos for doing so. It helps with rehearsals. I see no downside.

Re: Dorico 6 released!
Of course, Dorico's proofing doesn't (and can't ) check for "wrong" notes, or missing slurs. (I'm hoping that a future version will be able to check for consecutives, though!) Because it's available on Elements and SE, I do think it's going to be a massive help to 'novice' engravers. And ...

Re: Dorico 6 released!
As a persnickety composer, I can't wait to run the proofreading tool on my existing compositions and see what (Dorico thinks) I've missed. I was just telling with someone else that I will soon be explaining that Dorico’s new proofreading function doesn’t replace the need for a human proofreader. Th...

Re: The term "Authentic" in Music Editing
"In conclusion: While the term "authentic" can be used in different ways, a modern edition of an earlier piece of music can be considered authentic if it demonstrates faithfulness to the original score, an understanding of the historical context, and a sincere expression of the perfo...

Re: A Question of Hearing and Notation in Beethoven
John, I laughed out loud at your first reharmonization using the triplet turn in the right hand as inspiration for the bass line. That’s cute. :) For me, this ambiguity of harmonic specifics is what makes motivic or thematic writing powerful in skilled hands. You occasionally see this put to good us...

Re: A Question of Hearing and Notation in Beethoven
Because of the leap of a fourth in the low register in all the examples, I do hear a root position dominant and then a root position tonic chord implied as if the C and following F were the bass voices for what follows. Stylistically, for this piece, I can’t argue with your interpretation. It’s per...

Re: A Question of Hearing and Notation in Beethoven
Anyone hear the upbeat to the first movement of Beethoven's piano Sonata op. 2 no. 1 as a dominant harmony (a C triad in root position) resolving to a tonic harmony (F minor) in measure 1? I definitely hear this as implied dominant harmony. I would not go so far as to specify what inversion. There’...
