Re: Range and Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas
I agree wholeheartedly with the conviction not to rewrite passages to take advantage of the larger range of modern instruments, but for a completely different reason. I find it intrinsic to Beethoven's personality, even stubbornness, if you will, that he seldom, if ever, avoided the problems created...

Re: Correcting Small Errors in Beethoven's Piano Sonatas
Just curious: do you attach any significance to the different slur endpoints in the two iterations of the same material? I'm referring to the slur over the first two triplets containing the b dim7.

Re: Beethoven’s Metronome Markings in op. 106
Sorry, I was indeed unclear. I think Schnabel tried to play those first few bars as close to Beethoven's MM as he could and it just didn't seem to work, not necessarily because he was unable to play it at that speed but because such a theatrical initial gesture ('Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me...

Re: Beethoven’s Metronome Markings in op. 106
Another point, as devil's advocate: the idea of performing an entire movement in one tempo is a relatively modern concept, and certainly not one which existed in the time of Beethoven. (I can imagine its not even existing before the 1950's.) Why should the opening 'exordium' at the beginning of the ...

Re: Beethoven’s Metronome Markings in op. 106
I agree with your description of pizzicato as not being synonymous with a 'short and dry staccato', certainly when you've heard it imitated on an instrument with slightly 'wet' damping. One of the reasons I'm also playing devil's advocate, like Schonbergian above (I remember when that half-tempo the...

Re: Beethoven’s Metronome Markings in op. 106
If you've ever played Beethoven on a period instrument (or a good, modern copy), many aspects of intention and interpretation can become clear. Beethoven owned (among others) a Broadwood grand piano and since the damping on the English instruments of the time was fairly slow or, in any case, nowhere...

Re: Two-note stem-side slurs and Elaine Gould
Not yet, I'm afraid, but in contrast to most other notation programs, it's still being developed. The different situations described here are the kinds of contexts the Dorico team is working to get the program to understand, and it's a matter of increasing the ability of the program to recognise the...

Re: Music spacing definition by Helene Wanske
Interesting discussion! Very good engraving example, Knut. I agree that a slight amount of extra space before and after the barlines yields a slightly quieter Notenbild (is there a good word for this in English?), although too much interrupts the flow of the music. With few exceptions I would genera...

Re: Various Line Settings
Sorry I didn't respond earlier but there's so much to follow (in addition to a busy concert schedule)! My reason for using Engraver NH at 22 points was that I like the width and I think they are better in balance with the beams which come across to me as being too bold together with the Maestro NH. ...

Minion Pro is a favourite of mine, as well. As elegant as classic Garamond but a bit more modern.
