Re: 3 beaming choices
Many composers have had a different attitude toward musical notation than many editors and engravers, which is what I have tried to call attention to in the threads called Composers vs Engravers.

Re: 3 beaming choices
David, I am glad you agree. You probably know this little story, but for anyone who doesn't: Brahms was with his gang at the local tavern, and someone rose and proposed a toast "to our greatest composer" looking directly at Brahms. Brahms got up and raised his stein saying: "Yes, to M...

Re: 3 beaming choices
OCTO. is so right. Context is everything. If this were written by Joe Blow in 4/4, I would say B, as I answered at FinaleForum. But since it is by the world's greatest composer and in 8/8. I would leave it exactly as it appears in the autograph. Mozart is doing something special and beaming against ...

Re: Unorthodox stem direction
Slurs (when used properly) are helpful in vocal music as in instrumental music in that they show the small decorative units, which encourages the singer (or player) to emphasize the most important note and deemphasize the less. Without them, the music looks one-dimensional with every note equally im...

Re: Figured bass font in Sibelius
That looks very good to me, Harpsichordmaker. The distance of the figures from the staff looks best when the systems are not too close together as on most of the pages. But if the systems are close, the figures might be a little closer to the staves they are associated with. For example, the first f...

Re: Figured bass font in Sibelius
In case you are looking for a general impression, I find the DS font much more visible and therefore more appropriate for figured bass than Opus. However, the symbols are a little large and positioned a little far from the staff and from each other vertically for my taste. On the other hand, the 76 ...

Re: Please enlighten me on the meaning of...
And on the subject of interestingly shaped slurs, I noticed some wonderfully striking ones encompassing several instrumental staves at a time in the score of Berg's Lulu... I can imagine, David, given some of the beauties I see in the vocal score available at IMSLP! (USA and Canada only) His Piano ...
