Re: Composers vs Engravers: stem direction 3
What font is this? I fooled the font-meister! :) One of our very own John Ruggero's creations! You are such a nice guy. I wish I could take credit for it, (or would it be blame?) Actually, it's Maestro with Engraver accents, the famous Ruggero G clef, italic expressions are Vortragsbezchnung by our...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: stem direction 3
My opinion is that Chopin first wrote without the :4 , and later on he decided to add the octave for the more efficient attack. If Chopin added the G# later, it was lucky that he didn't draw the stems and beams as long as some of those in the next measure, because it would have been impossible! Act...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: stem direction 3
I am glad you are enjoying this one, MJCube! At first look it doesn’t seem to make sense to begin a slur on a staccato note. But then I see the slur points to the melody note, the lower octave! Then I could understand that the top octave can be short while the bottom is legato. I suppose to make thi...

Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 1
An interesting case of stem direction in Chopin's etude op 10 no 4. Here is the composer's MS, which appears to be a rough draft: Chopin Stems MS.jpeg The stems go the wrong way in the pickup bar because the 16ths are leading to the lower C# 16th in the following measure, not the higher one. Because...

Re: Proofreading Questions
The golden question, then: What kinds of things should a computer be able to do well when it comes to music engraving? Thank you for your compliment, tismst! I would like to do it. Maybe in "digital notation tools" subforum, a kind of "how should slur work in an application" or ...

Re: Proofreading Questions
Yes, a great idea! In months to come I will do a massive work, and that would be of a great help (also sharing my experiences!). I will start such a thread at some point, unless someone else wants to. It would be very interesting to hear your experiences in writing this work. One of my first attemp...

Re: Proofreading Questions
I always compose by hand I do too. In a sketchbook in landscape orientation. At least the initial sketching. After that, I go directly to the computer because it is so much easier to lay things out and make changes. Playing the score is one of the most crucial ways for proofreading. You can even fe...

Re: Proofreading Questions
Thanks, MJCube. I am similarly "haphazard", which is why I started this thread. I think I need more method to my proofreading. I can relate to your frustration with all of the notational mistakes of others. During my hand-copying days we dealt with this kind of thing constantly. OCTO., I c...

Re: Proofreading Questions
Thanks, tisimst. More questions:
Do you proof from a printed copy, marking it in pencil in the traditional way?
Do you make a separate pass through the score for each item?
And does anyone use playback as part of proofing?

Proofreading Questions
I would be very interested to know how Notatio members handle proofreading. Do you have a system? And publishers seem to exhibit various levels of accuracy. Why, for example, are Henle and G. Schirmer editions (at least the old ones) so accurate and yet Wiener Urtext and Durand less so? Does anyone ...
