Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Well, to really understand the difference types of editions etc. one would have to go through the history of music publishing, because it is intimately connected with both the scholarly and commercial sides of publishing. But to be concise, I would say that critical editions are more easily defined...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
The main difference being: Urtext are meant to be studied, not played from.. But ALL of my Henle, Wiener Urtext editions have fingering and other performance directions, are called Urtext on the cover, are practical editions and intended to be played from, and contain no extensive critical apparatu...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Wild. In my experience of mainly solo and chamber piano music, you gave a good description of the difference between the two, but in reverse. Critical editions are the library editions with the extensive critical apparatus like the NMA, and urtext editions are the practical ones that have the finger...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
The braces look off center in the online preview, as well as your examples, so I guess it is not an artifact of the iPad version with that tiny little title at the top. About fingering. Most urtext edition that I am aware of, as opposed to critical editions, have fingering and other performance sugg...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Strange goings-on in this edition. The piano braces are off center. Also note the anti-physical fingering in the first measures forcing the 3rd and 4th fingers to work against each other. Its like someone is saying, the body should be able to do it this way comfortably and therefore must , even thou...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
I can only see the online preview that doesn't include the first page. However, this sounds like another uncharacteristic Henle error. There is no note about it at the back and the orchestral version has a definite E.

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
The C is played simultaneously with the G-E on the last 1/8th of the measure. The Henle engraver mistakenly separates the two, which are very close together in the original and all other editions that I am familiar with. Check out IMSLP. I am really surprised at what Henle has done here, and you sho...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
You're very welcome, Neera. Placing the rest on the high note clarifies the rhythm, so I think that you are right to do that. Could be the first time the measure has been correctly engraved!

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Henle has an urtext that one can look through:
https://www.henle.de/en/Pavane-pour-une ... te/HN-1260
They seem to have made the corrections but kept the eighth rest in the original location.

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Thanks so much, Neera. Glad to help. It's an interesting spot. I have several piano works of Ravel in the Peters edition edited by Roger Nichols, but not of the Pavane. The ones I do have have critical commentaries in the back. Some of the other major publishers probably have such urtext editions as...
