Beethoven’s notational brilliance

The following passage occurs at the end of the first movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata op. 101: op 101.1 MS.png "What’s up" with the down-stem on the high E? Plenty of room up there for an up-stemmed note. Here is the first edition which, as usual, follows the original notation: op 101....

I haven't ever seen this either, Neera, and think your guess is a good one. OCTO, I seem to recall you posting another similar marking several years ago, perhaps from the same source or composer?

Re: Should I subdivide the beaming?

On page 154 Gould seems to advocate showing the beats with the beaming, so I am guessing that in your case, it would depend on whether your are counting in quarter and thus use your first version, or eighth note beats, and thus use the second. However, I would use the first version in either case si...

The Palmer Method

A recent discussion at Finale Forum concerning hand copying brought up the "Palmer Method" a method of handwriting that was taught in US grade schools as late as the 1960s. It gave one a beautiful script and ability to write for long periods without tiring. Here are some pages from my wife...

Re: Proofreading suggestions

You must love used book stores as much as I do.

I wish I were as disciplined in proofreading as in that book, and that is the main problem.

Re: Centered beams in Mozart's K. 330

Not quite sure what they are researching but if it is Mozart's notational practices, the manuscripts and first editions of the piano sonatas are now fairly complete at IMSLP and worth a detailed look through. One does need to be aware that some of the first editions were done after Mozart's death an...
