Re: Repeat Dynamics at Rehearsal Marks?

This "practical" suggestion sounds quite impractical to me for two reasons: 1. It could lead to a lot of second guessing on the player's part: Why is this p here? It's been p. Did I miss a previous dynamic change? So the extra dynamics would probably need to be placed in parentheses to sho...

Re: "durational equivalent" name?

Elaine Gould in her book Behind Bars calls these "metric equations" or "tempo equations" where there is an actual tempo change involved.

Re: Staff and leger line thicknesses

The staff lines, bar lines (particularly) and even the slurs still look thin to me compared to what I am getting in Dorico using the Bravura music font. So as jrethorst said, it probably has some thing to do with the font you are using. And I also find the outsized time signatures calling attention ...

Re: octave line question

For reference: Here are the slurs shown in a Finale Default File. Note the famous wispy ends of the slurs which must be changed. However, the general shape is good: Finale Default .png Here in Finale with my personal settings: Finale Personal Settings.png Here with the necessary hand adjustment: Fin...

Re: octave line question

I also agree that changing general slur settings to meet a specific situation is a no-win in both Finale and Dorico. However, it is possible to modify the Dorico default settings and the Finale default settings to handle most situations well and thus minimize hand adjustment. Now, if only those or s...

Re: octave line question

MichelRE I agree that your slur shapes need help, but you shouldn't have to tweak them so much by hand. Have you looked at past threads concerning Dorico slurs on the Dorico Forum? I was just as critical of them in the beginning, but changes in settings have given me pretty good results, almost as g...

Re: Some remarkable engraving

Thanks, Neera. It's always important to consider other possibilities. In this case, however the sf doesn't appear to me to be a problem. The engraver could have placed it just as he did the previous ones and the one on the fermata chord in the second example. At X he had some extra room to put the s...

Re: Piano reduction

Debussy's Minstrels (Preludes 1) has a very nice and simple snare drum imitation and also what might be considered a temple block imitation.

Re: Piano reduction

1. Piano arpeggios substitute nicely for harp glissandos. 2. I would use chromatic glisses for the trombone slides. They could be a pretty good approximation if played rapidly. And omit tones as necessary to eliminate hand and thumb crossing, if possible. If the the slides are extensive, you could u...
