Re: Dynamics: the optical center

No, I'm saying that other than the one's he specifically mentioned, I cannot assume which to infer that he likes. Some of course, but which and how many I do not know, therefore I cannot say that I don't like all the ones that he does. This was an error in my previous comment.

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

John mentioned 7 that are too far left for him that I like.

if one assumes all others are OK for him, they are too far right for me, but the assumption that john thinks all others are OK maybe false.

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

Ha!. There will always be different opinions when aesthetic judgement is involved. I think we both have similar view of what feels right, but mine is perhaps half a space further to the left. Neither are incorrect as there is no fixed rule.

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

Compared to John's taste, to me the ones he considers too far left are the ones I consider correct, and the ones he likes are, to me, too far right!

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

To my eye, the centre of the dynamic should be placed slightly left of centre because the dynamic is italicised. The amount of offset is determined by the angle of lean of the italicisation. I don't mean specifically that the centre of the dynamic follows the angle to the centre of the notehead, it ...

Re: First page of today's work

You should worry, I've been on this job 12 days now!.
Not as bad as spending a month reconstructing the film score version of WSS "I feel Pretty". I was sure I was going insane with that one.

Re: First page of today's work

John: the Durand style uses no abbreviation points, so accel is correct in this case. Octo: given that this is a quartet and all staves are present on all pages, I think this is clear. I have tried to make as much space between staves as possible to maintain clarity. Perhaps the position of the time...

Re: Algorithms of accidental spacings

I agree that Finale's default line settings are way too thin, especially for staff sizes less than 5mm. They are easily changed though.
The also have staff carline and stems set to the same thickness which is awful. Again easily changed.

Re: crowded voices

I've seen a number of cello parts on 2 staves. And I know Xenakis once wrote a piano piece with 10 staves (one for each finger), so whatever works. But I'd suggest only doing something like that if it's absolutely necessary. And I don't think it is here.
