Re: Note values in Schumann

Yes, I've just listened to Christian Gerhaher & Gerold Huber in that last song. The Breitkopf edition (which I have here) is immediately clear to me as a non-Pianist, so that I could read it in my head before confirming the reality via the recording. The original notation had me scratching that ...

Re: Note values in Schumann

Which sort of comes back to my original question as to whether or not it is appropriate for a contemporary composer to do this. I have not written a lot of piano music, but am contemplating at least one, maybe two song cycles for a husband and wife who are able to perform together on-line at present...

Re: Tantacrul Dorico video

… … …Why some subject themselves to this kind of torture is beyond me. Because for this old (senile?) man learning new software might be an even greater torture. I'm not a music ‘engraver’ as such. I compose in manuscript and then prepare a fair copy in Finale from which I (or somebody) can prepare...

Note values in Schumann

This is from Schumann's Dichterliebe. I'm interested in the crotchets (quarters) in the right hand. It's clear what is meant, but would it be acceptable to notate it thus nowadays, or would one be advised to do it differently?

Re: Dorico 3.5 released!

If only I wasn't so old (79) I'd now give Dorico a very serious go, but I just feel it would be a distraction (to add to all the others of the time). I'm almost tempted to give up computer typesetting & return exclusively to the medium in which I'm most naturally fluent: manuscript… Best not, I ...

Re: Working during Covid-19 lockdown

Does anybody else find it very difficult to write music that is coherent, let alone substantial, in the present circumstances? Or is it just me?

Working during Covid-19 lockdown

Although at least one significant country with citizens as members of this forum is not currently in full lockdown, others are, including my own country of Scotland. I had presumed that I would be wonderfully active composing at my desk with all the extra time on my hands as an elderly (79) person w...

Re: Nightingale source code

… … …I suspect to get publishable results you needed much more engraving experience than I had at the time. Then I moved up to Finale; now Dorico. Each step up (including Nightingale from my handwriting) seemed revolutionary. As a composer rather than copyist, engraver or publisher, I believe I hav...

Re: "Ten Music Notation Programs", including Dorico

I may be a flag-waver for Dorico, but that's because I've used so many other notation apps that didn't do what software is supposed to do: to help us; and to do the work for us. The only notation ‘software’ that can really be made to do exactly what I want is manuscript; but of course that's time-c...
