Re: A Checklist for Making Parts

Interesting that he recommends non-italic bar numbers. Gould recommends italics, and I'm happy with that. However, I do go along with making them sufficiently large: they are sometimes too small in both parts and scores.

Re: How best to show alternative words for singer?

A slight up-date: I think the or: is perhaps better placed like this. Any thoughts?

Re: How best to show alternative words for singer?

Thank you both for your responses. Something like this? I've used Ben's 5pt dashes with 3pt gaps for now, but haven't changed the thickness (yet), although I'm not sure whether it's the Finale default or something I'd modified. I may or may not use different settings for the vocal score (with the pr...

How best to show alternative words for singer?

Is it clear, without further indication, that the lower line (‘2nd verse’ as it were) of lyrics is an alternative in case repetitions of ‘me’ might be uncomfortable for the voice? Voice is dramatic mezzo, tempo is dotted crotchet = 96. In theory, all those repetitions of ‘me’ might have the best dra...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

I've just checked three Boulez scores I have here. Two (but not Le marteau sans maître) have straight flags, but none use sans serif text fonts. I'm not sure that the straight flags do anything useful.

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

On the subject of Serif versus Sans Serif, the way the eye communicates with the brain and the memory is crucial. Design people like sans serif, but a sans serif font doesn't hold the eye in position as well as does a serif font (that is assuming other things are equal), although it might be margina...

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released

Oh, if only I were younger, I'd give Dorico a serious go! However, at 77 I'm probably safer sticking to what I think I know (Finale).

Re: Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

It's turned out to be a bit of a non-problem, as each of the short cadenzas for Bsn 1 in this little (4 min) piece can be made to fit on one system.

Re: Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

Thanks.

I'll work out how best to achieve what she suggests in Finale. (Might be a bit convoluted at first, I suspect, but once done should be repeatable easily enough.)

Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

What is the best solution for placement of the whole bar rest plus pausa under the mini cadenza for bassoon 1? Is it OK where it is, or should it be more to the left?

In Finale I used JW conceal barlines for the cadenza and blank notation in the three lower staves for the concealed whole bars rests.
