Re: Opposing Seconds with dots

instead of swapping voices why not simply change the voice column index?

Numbering instruments on shared staves

I'm wondering about this since I don't have many scores that actually help me answer the question (lots of scores, just.. none that have this particular issue.) So flute 1 and 2 share a staff in the condensed score. The staff is labeled as Flûte 1/2 (ie: the numbers are one above the other, next to ...

Re: Page size order conventions

What about cultures (like Japanese) that read vertically? From what I see the JIS specifications still state width x height. Japanese has actually been written horizontally since the mid 19th century. With both horizontal and vertical writing in use since before then under certain circumstances (fo...

Re: Page size order conventions

paper size isn't math. it's not "a rectangle", it's a sheet of paper upon which graphical information will be printed. I'd say that the first thing you see is its "width", since we (Westerners) read from left to right = the width. Then we are conscious of the "length", ...

Re: Page size order conventions

not USA, Canada. there's no "rule", there's no need for it. There are already the nomenclatures "portrait" and "landscape" which establish which direction the paper goes. Those two descriptors tell you what the disposition of the paper is. The size is a different matter...

Re: Page size order conventions

so 9 (width) x 12 (length)

most writing paper here is measured this way: 8.5 x 11 (letter), 8.5 x 14 (legal), etc...

Re: Hierachy of text expressions

oh, I doubt I'd ever see more than two expressions one above the other in one of my scores. I was just postulating a rather extreme example ;)

Re: Hierachy of text expressions

yes, that's horizontal, but if they need to be placed vertically?
am I to presume that the order would be highest to lowest (from left to right in this list)?
so:

Tutti
div.
arco
sul pont.
?

Hierachy of text expressions

Is there a resource somewhere (I can't seem to find it in Gould, or at least, am not searching the correct wording to get my answer) indicating the normal hierarchy for playing techniques and expressions? for example, div., arco/pizz, unis., bow marking, harmonic circle, fermata, etc... I'm finding ...
