boxed/unboxed instrument name changes on staff
The question is should I use a rectangular frame for instrument name changes (for example to note when a clarinetist changes to a bass clarinet, or flute changes to piccolo)? if so, should it be (unboxed) "to piccolo" ________________________ (boxed) "[piccolo]" or (boxed) "...

A question about MuseScore that I saw brought up
I saw some mentions of this, but was wondering if it was just random rumour-mongering or if it had some basis in truth:
Is MuseScore funded by Russian money?
While others may not agree with me, my political leanings make it impossible for me to use a product that is developed with Russian money.

Re: Working in Dorico!
you normally shouldn't have had to do this.
there are settings for ideal distances between all the various types of staff combinations.
the only time I have to go in and make manual changes in parts is for page turns.

Re: Art song question regarding author name
I'm not sure if the tempo should be 68, as it is not valid at the traditional Maelzel scale. A tempo of 69 might be better. Yes, I know that with modern digital metronomes, any tempo is possible (consider Stockhausen's 83.5, for example). You're absolutely correct. I hadn't noticed that. I normally...

Re: clef change problem for viola
I have a Samuel Barber score where all instruments that are even remotely in an alto range are in alto clef, for example, the horns. But this is one single score, everything else of his is notated "normally". maybe he was trying something out in that score. I presume the actual horn parts ...

Re: Dorico 5.1.60 update!
I use an 88 key controller, and prefer that the notes I enter be the ones that are notated.
I dislike using the octave shift button because it's quite far to my left at the end of the keyboard, and I also tend to accidentally leave it shifted to the wrong octave or accidentally pressed.

Re: Timpani roll notation
the trill is the "old notation, yes.
logically speaking, you cannot "trill" on a single timpani head.
so the consensus is that a slash tremolo notation is more accurate and correctly represents what is being performed on the instrument.

Re: Dorico 5.1.60 update!
yes, the possibility to enter notes on your MIDI keyboard where they are written is nice. It was annoying to always have to remember to play piccolo parts one octave up, or doublebass parts one octave lower. the triplet thing is nice, not a HUGE time saver for me since it already pretty much did thi...

Measure numbers in art songs (did a google search)
I decided to try a google search for the following question: "do you include measure numbers in art songs?" The very first thing at the top of the results page was an AI generated series of answers. Yes, measure numbers are typically included in art songs and other pieces of music: When to...

Re: Tuba clarification
Yes, this IS a confusing topic. However, from my understanding, modern tubas can have different tube lengths, and thus different fundamentals, BUT are always written as non-transposing instruments. it is up to the tubist to do the transpositions in their head. and apparently this is more or less sec...
