although in David's last example I wouldn't even think of calling that a "glissando". it's a line with an arrow, and it doesn't connect noteheads. It's obviously pertaining to a particular playing technique.

technically, those aren't "glissandi". they are pitch bends.

and John, Octo, and Hautbois are definitely up there as far as knowledgeable people are concerned.

Rick: I think you may be misunderstanding the fundamental issue I was bringing up. Of course there are amateurs and hobbyists, or people with considerably less formal training, out there. The particular issue arises when people who do lack a certain musical education argue that something should be t...

Re: marcato and staccato
And, in fact, nobody has every played that chart incorrectly, which seems proof of concept. This really shouldn't be your "best practice" for notation. Just because musicians are able to understand the basic idea behind something, does not mean that that is in fact the correct way to nota...

Re: O/T bariolage question
hehehe, no, I'm always making little changes, particularly for clarity and playability.
I'm certain the violist who's premiering it will have her own comments to make. but I'd like to give her the least amount of work to do, other than learning the notes and making music out of it.

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition
I think Finale's arp. font allows for a tiny amount of give-and-take. I noticed that at very close-up magnification, when you adjust the length of an arp. line the thickness changes minutely. As far as I'm concerned, this is an acceptable solution. in the end, those minor deviations in thickness don...

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition
Thanks, MichelRE. The ones on pgs.131-133 in Gould look correct to me. Perhaps elsewhere? Or maybe you like them ultrashort? well, maybe not "ultra" short, but I'd rather have the top of the arp line arrive flush with the top of the top note, and the bottom of the line arrive flush with t...

Re: [ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition
Dorico 4 does continue to overextend the arpeggio indications. In Dorico, to affect the top/bottom of an arp. indication you have to do it on a case by case. there are settings to affect the default positions of horizontal lines, but for some reason, not for vertical lines (arp. being considered a ...

Re: O/T bariolage question
Felipe, I presume the brackets underneath the staff at measures 1 and 3 indicate that the same string is intended?
Also, the very last beat of the last measure, I see a little"0" over a C... but that can't be an open string.Unless you meant that as the octave harmonic?
