Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Your description of Critical Editions is just spot on, John, and I think I feel more at peace with myself for calling most of my editions "Critical Performance Edition"(s). I do indeed research all available sources, list everything in the critical apparatus BUT I also make performance-ori...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
The supplementary cello part is in addition to the empty, untouched part which indeed is 100% Urtext. Henle was the first one to do this and many copied them, and for good reasons. Now, why they add fingerings to the piano part can only be explained by economical reasons: more pages, more retail cos...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
This is perhaps bringing this off-topic but my knowledge and experience of Urtext vs Critical editions is different. Urtext reproduce everything in the closest source up to and including the autograph, including every error, may add editorial slurs/hairpin/other bracketed items, and list all differe...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Wow, John! You are a true hunter! I had to look twice before noticing it... but yes, now that I see it I cannot erase it from my view! Luckily these fingerings are not Ravel's. I even wonder what is the purpose of making an Urtext and then adding fingerings that were not in the original text. When I...

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
I have reported both these and several issues with the usability of their iPad app to the Editorial Department.

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
I will definitely write them about this.
Also, if you have this edition handy, check note 3 of the LH at the very beginning.
They write C3 (below middle-C), while everyone else writes E3.

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Here's another one, bar 53: Screenshot 2025-01-19 (18.58.02).jpeg The three F-G cross handing notes are written in a way that places them on 8th 6-7-8 of the bar. If that is correct, the upbeat to 54 is in the 9th 8th of the bar. Henle edition 1260, from the screenshot above inside of the Henle Libr...

I see ...
I believe in my re-engraving I will put the rest where it rhythmically belong.
Thank you for all the precious feedback!

Re: Ravel Pavane rhythmical question
Through the nkoda app I could browse the 2008 Barenreiter edition and the most recent Max Eschig one, this last claiming to be the only true updated source from the composer manuscript. Due to nkoda policies I could not take screenshots but one thing is certain: both editions keep the same mistake p...
