Re: Control Shape and Position of Windows on Mac

Errr.. no. The computer doesn't store anything in RAM when it's switched off. The information is stored in ~/Library/Saved Application State, and read from disk at startup. Very glad to be proven wrong and to learn something new. Thank you, Ben! I believe I felt the Mac being much slower at startup...

Re: Control Shape and Position of Windows on Mac

"I have System Preferences>General>Close Windows when quitting an app unchecked, if that is the option you are referring to. When I shut down I check the box that says to reopen windows when logging back in. That's me and I am just a geeky Mac user, not a system administrator, but I always unc...

So you quit certain apps but do not shut the Mac down.
Sounds sensible.
Thanks!

Re: Control Shape and Position of Windows on Mac

If you've turned OFF "Close windows when quitting an application". In case it's needed, it's in System Preferences > Desktop & Dock There is an annoyance in the Finder, which seems to close the active window when you quit Finder. One cannot truly quit Finder, right? Just Relaunch it w...

Bar numbering for repeats discussion

It seems that there are several standards for repeats bar numbering. For the sake of this discussion, I will use a very simple example: a piece whose first 8 bars are repeated, with a finale primo and finale secondo. Options I know appear to be: nothing: just write 8 and 8 slightly distinguish: writ...

Re: Piano pedal vertical alignment

You are very wlecome, John. "a whole rest" - I guess you mean "a lot of other things"? It would be astonishing if, in an edition of B's piano sonatas, there was just one whole rest that needed attention! I believe he means the whole rest in the left hand of bar 199. Generally, i...

Re: Piano pedal vertical alignment

Re: Piano pedal vertical alignment

Great point! Indeed, I’ve engraved works by this composer from both his early production (1810s) and his late one (1850s). The first ones have pedal markings in the middle of the grand staff, while the second ones are all below. I will use two pedal lines and hide end/start to achieve this, until Do...

Re: Piano pedal vertical alignment

Fascinating, thank you! Here's Gould, page 333: Consequently, consecutive pedal—and-release signs for a particular pedal on the same system will not necessarily align on the same horizontal level. However, an individual pedal-and—release instruction should always align, for clarity. If there is room...

Re: Piano pedal vertical alignment

Thank you, John. I used to say horizontally aligned as well but then I learned that since their Y-position is on the same "horizontal plane", that may be best described as vertically aligned. Or perhaps I'm just wrong, I don't know. What I meant is whether they should sit on the same horiz...
