Re: Interesting Notation in Ravel’s Ondine

The Peters is correct, but did Ravel really write it as shown in the first version or did the engravers make a mistake? If he did write it like that then I'm guessing it was just an oversight.

Re: Marcato (rooftop) accent always above?

Okay, thanks.

That makes some sense. But I thought that's why up bow symbols were drawn so differently than the marcato accent, and when the marcato is upside down is beneath the staff anyway.

Re: Marcato (rooftop) accent always above?

Thanks, John. Yes, it can be placed beneath a note of a second voice, but I'm talking about the default nature standard of marcato symbols always (or almost always) being above the staff of a single voice staff. I don't get it. You have a line of stem up notes going along with an accent here, a tenu...

Re: Accents in the staff

I don't know if I've ever seen a Schirmer score, but I came across there style guide recently and found it pretty standard in most places but eccentric in others. For example, they don't apply trill lines unless the note is tied. Even if it's a whole note, it doesn't get a trill line.

Re: Accents in the staff

I agree with both of you. I don't recall ever seeing accents in the staff and it doesn't look right to me.

Accents in the staff

What are your thoughts on accents and staccatissimos in the staff? I was looking through the Schirmer Manual of Style and Usage and they said they consider articulations to be part of the notehead and their house style is to place them in the staff if need be, under the same conditions a staccato or...
