Re: First engraving project with Dorico

Nice arrangement! I agree with John and Schönbergian on the commas—not necessary IMO. Speaking of systems per page, I have just been working on an A4 score with 7 systems per page, 6 mm staff size. Earlier music than yours, so less space-demanding, but you should certainly consider following John's ...

Re: The term "Authentic" in Music Editing

The last part I find questionable: "... and a sincere expression of the performer's interpretation" Does that make sense? For myself, I draw a line towards the interpreter's domain that I try to never cross in my editing endeavours. "A sincere expression of the composer's intention&qu...

Re: A Question of Hearing and Notation in Beethoven

Anyone hear the upbeat to the first movement of Beethoven's piano Sonata op. 2 no. 1 as a dominant harmony (a C triad in root position) resolving to a tonic harmony (F minor) in measure 1? I never thought about the harmony, but have a soft spot for playing long upbeats :-) I certainly think it give...

Re: A Slur in Mozart’s K.333

Regarding the first post. My take on why the new beam starts at d5 is that the chord in this cadenza is still on the 6/4 (Bb/F). That is, I believe, the reason.

Re: Treatment of cautionary accidentals in modern critical edition

Would writing "Accidentals missing in the source and added by the editor" only in square brackets be a bad approach? Should they be "ficta" as well? Quite hard to do in a piano part if it is a chord where one note is missing the sharp, for example. If the accidental is obvious, ...

Re: Another Mozart Centered Beam

Yes indeed, very tricky questions. I guess the conclusion is that we really do not know, and that probably goes for beaming patterns in general as well. Working on old sources one might believe a certain beaming pattern really is important, just to see the exact same passage repeated later with a co...

Re: Another Mozart Centered Beam

What would be the reason for Bach to use a centered beam in bar 1 and not in bar 2? The music is the same.

Re: Classical concerto for double bass in MuseScore

Nicely done, everything is very clear. Anyway, some feedback and humble suggestions to improvements for the Oboe 1 part.

Maybe you could even consider fitting this music into three pages - right now the last page feels a bit empty.

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released

FWIW, the “optical” center for the dynamic letters is a human-decided horizontal position that is “embedded” into the corresponding metadata file of the chosen SMuFL font. Personally, I always thought that the optical centers in Bravura were a little off, as you’ve suggested, John. Because it’s par...
