Re: [puzzle] Slur solutions 1

Sorry, Knut. I realize now that I have a different definition of centering slur tips than the usual one. What I meant was that if the slur shape were continued on to actually contact the note head, it would touch it in the center. I should have said that I know that engravers of many generations hav...

Re: Finale Slur Settings

Thank you, Knut! That was a great exposition of your engraving philosophy; and one that I am definitely in tune with. For example, your computer engraving does not appear cold to me; but Henle's hand engraving does. So even though you do not agree with my impression of Henle, something is going on w...

Re: Beethoven's terminology?

You have a very active imagination!

That piece makes me nervous already, and I haven't even seen or heard it!

Re: [puzzle] Slur solutions 1

First, I want to compliment OCTO on this very informative exercise, which is a much better way to get at this issue than my slur experiment file idea. I agree with OCTO. that Knut's 1 is the best, because he was able to eliminate the extra space and achieve a beautiful shape. However, I don't think ...

Re: Software recognition, by eye

I never noticed that about the Finale hairpins, OCTO. Now I'l never see anything else when I insert one! Being no expert, I recognize LilyPond but the ugly default clef, Sibelius by the too thick default slurs and overall look, and Finale by the ugly Maestro treble clef and accent marks, the absurd ...

Re: Beethoven's terminology?

If they are not playing it well, say "intimo, intimo, gentlemen"... :) I notice that Beethoven is using expressive markings throughout this movement as at the beginning: a marking of "espressivo" is often used as a substitute for a dynamic marking. At the end he writes "espr...

Re: Finale Slur Settings

Yes, the slurs vary a lot in those examples, OCTO. so that a Finale setting placing emphasis on the left side would also not be accurate because it is also too uniform. Actually, in my Henle editions and several others I looked at, the slurs are much more uniform than in these examples. To me, the i...

Re: [puzzle] Slur solutions 1

Here are the unedited "out of the box" slurs using my new default settings, and then the way I would edit them to improve their appearance. I did not do anything special in editing them; I just moved the handles.

Re: Extreme dynamics

He often says "tutta la forza" in connection with these extreme dynamics. And there are accent marks that are similar: sFFFFFF. All of this is excessive, to say the least.
