Re: The End of FINALE

I was wondering if SmartMusic would also die if Finale went the way of the dodo. I think SmartMusic sales sort of exploded during COVID lockdown. I know the local public schools where I live are now using it. That's probably MM's current revenue stream and I assume one of the reasons they are killi...

ASMAC - Finale's Finale

ASMAC is hosting an all-star panel on "Finale's Finale: Move Forward or Stay the Course" on 9/3, with Daniel Spreadbury, Emily Grishman, John Hinchey, Russ Anixter, etc. I'm a member but I'm pretty sure it's free to register for non-members. Anyway, here's the link: https://asmac.org/civi/...

Re: The End of FINALE

I would suggest MM to remove all licensing, and make the software open-source, someone might just keep it running. I would think there's about a 0% chance of that happening, LOL! This isn't like Leland Smith coding something out of a labor of love. Peaksware is a holding company. They bought MakeMu...

Re: Finale ceases development

Not only ceased development but will only support authorization until August 25, 2025. So the clock is ticking until the software is truly dead. Microsoft is sunsetting Windows 10, 8, and 7 on October 14, 2025, and you can't upgrade to Win11 if your system doesn't have sufficient specs. I suspect t...

Re: Brief use of independent time signature

As a player, I think I'd rather see the 3 triplets instead of a 9:6 tuplet regardless of the time sig. 3/4 against 6/8 is very common, and the subdivision is so simple given the 3 quarters in the previous bar that I'd easily sightread the top example perfectly. The 9:6 I'd stop and mentally figure o...

Re: To condense or not to condense, that is the question...

Out of curiosity, would you remove the staves for Piccolo when it isn't playing and that performer is back on 2nd flute? (back and forth within the same movement, for example) For me, it's all about helping orient the conductor to facilitate rehearsal time. If Clarinets and Bassoons are both playin...

Re: To condense or not to condense, that is the question...

I think I've been asked to do just about every combination or this before at one time or another, but my default for orchestral conductor's scores is condense by "like" instruments as needed, and if an instrument is playing at all in a movement, then their rests will be shown on every syst...

I seem to recall that's just how this forum software works. It sits in Outbox until it has been read by the recipient, at which point it gets moved to Sent.

Re: Vertical alignment of bar lines

I believe Arnstein used the phrase "it draws your eye down" instead of horizontally across the page. The idea is to prevent the music from looking like vertical columns. Rivers in justified text annoy me for this very reason, but I guess the barlines here don't. The casting off reflects t...
