Re: Behind Bars - "General Conventions"

I figure that as long as the text indications are clear and unambiguous, that is all that matters. In the particular example we were discussing in another thread (an indication for piano pedal use), I think attempting to use a standardiz/sed ;) Italian indication COULD lead to more problems than sol...

Re: Behind Bars - "General Conventions"

GB English versus US English. I'm not sure if you are referencing my comment regarding the word staff/stave, but I'm not American. In Canada we use GB spelling in general. And the use of stave in the singular, while not incorrect, is not "the GB" way of writing it. It is ONE OF the ways t...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

I feel that I should probably attempt to learn how to use Dorico, sooner rather than later. David: Dorico staff have made some great videos ranging from very basic "what to do first" videos to ones covering more complex notation issues. I have to admit that a FEW of their videos are a bit...

Re: Italian question

I'm lucky in that sense, I rarely resort to Italian expressions, preferring to simply use my native tongue (French), where if I really needed the pedal to be held until the end I could simply write "hold the pedal until the end" (tenir la pedal jusqu'à la fin.) It would appear that scores ...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

you can take what you want from what that teacher said, but it's irrelevant to the discussion in question here.

you are comparing things that are not equivalent.

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

there is a distinct difference between "start with Bach-style inventions", which implies a lack of basic craft and requires years of work to gain such, and "start with a smaller less-complex project", which implies a lack of basic familiarity with the particular software, and can...

Re: Italian question

John, that's where the use of "con ped. sempre" (or even "alla fine") would differentiate from simply writing "ped. alla fine". though I image someone could write something very specific like "tieni ped. (fino) alla fine" or something. seeing "con ped. se...

Re: Italian question

I wouldn't interpret "ped. sempre" as meaning to hold the sustain pedal until the end. I'm looking at this as a pianist. I WOULD, however, hold it until the end if it said "pedal sempre alla fine". I've come across a few works that required this over the years. however, in my own...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

1st piece of advice: absolutely completely forego ANY desire to do any layout work before you have finished entering notes. Dorico, by default, does a very good job laying out material for you. Don't move measures, change page layouts, hide or remove staves, etc... until you have absolutely entered ...
