Re: tied quavers everywhere!
Or just teach people to hold notes for the written duration unless expressly indicated otherwise! I have seen pencil markings of this kind: a horizontal arrow to the end of the note. (Given that we are generally talking about lengthier notes at the ends of phrases.) Though it's possible that this co...

Re: The shape of the crotchet rest
Yes, there's the 'backwards quaver' rest, the 'mirror z', as well as the modern squiggle. I've yet to find how/why the modern squiggle came about, let alone gained ascendency. I can only suppose that other rest forms are easily confused with other durations, and as the crotchet became the dominant b...

The shape of the crotchet rest
My 7-year-old daughter is learning music notation at school. (Thankfully.) She told me today that they are taught to draw the crotchet rest as "a Z with a C below", which was a novel idea to me, though pleasing enough. As a result of which, I'm now having to research the origins of that fo...

More Dorico updates!
A maintenance upgrade, Dorico 2.1.10, has been released today. The Steinberg team have also stated that another major free update will be forthcoming later this year, with a host of new features. https://www.scoringnotes.com/news/dorico-2-1-10-released-with-bug-fixes/ I've actually lost count of how...

Re: From png to font type
Are you sure there isn't a font for this already? A quick Google search shows several different families of Woodwind fingering fonts.

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released
Accents appearing within the staff I've noted that the accents stay outside the staff when using other SMuFL fonts, such as MTF-Cadence. So it may be possible to over-ride this setting -- admittedly in a fiddly XML file somewhere, or in the font itself. The reason I won't use D for engraving is the...

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released
That is encouraging because it might not be too difficult for Dorico to add greater control in a user-friendly way. The 'direction' of Dorico's feature implementation seems to suggest much more control of all elements as time goes by. The Performance Techniques editor, roughly analogous with Finale...

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released
FWIW, the “optical” center for the dynamic letters is a human-decided horizontal position that is “embedded” into the corresponding metadata file of the chosen SMuFL font. Personally, I always thought that the optical centers in Bravura were a little off, as you’ve suggested, John. Because it’s par...

Re: Dorico Pro 2 released
I think it's been often said here that Finale's default settings for slurs could also do with some adjustment. (And indeed, I've followed advice here for improving the values.)

Re: New to engraving...am I on the right track?
Hyphenation should be done to dictionary word divisions, usually split along etymological and phonetic grounds. Consonants should NEVER be placed "where they sound", which is a hideous trend in recent years. Jucio Brennan's hyphenator is not infallible, though it seems to get it right here...
