Re: Repeated tone abbreviation standards
Looking through numerous scores I THINK it is a newer convention as against an older one, although the newer style seems to pre-date the use of computer-generated music-typesetting. It's a little difficult to be sure as, for some reason, the vast majority of examples which I can find in more recent ...

Re: Whether to replace manuscript parts?
A further comment on archiving - there is a lesson from this, I think. A little over a month ago, one member of the quartet mentioned above who prefer my MS parts, temporarily mislaid his part (it happens) when it was needed in London by the quartet. I was asked if I had a PDF I might e-mail. I didn...

Whether to replace manuscript parts?
At a rehearsal earlier this week of a string quartet of mine using my own hand copied parts from 1994/5, I offered the performers the possibility of my preparing typeset ones (in Finale). The reaction was: “Oh no, we like to use the ones we have.” They went on to say that many typeset parts, includi...

As I read her, she has no ‘first choice’ as such for this.John Ruggero wrote:It was just pointed out at MM Forum by Ralph L Bowers Jr. that parallel beaming option is mentioned in Gould on page 223. It is not her first choice, however.

Re: Tenor Conference 2015, proceedings
Very interesting; but, heavens, what a lot of it!
Any advice, OCTO (or anyone else) about which of these many, many PDFs might be most useful to read? (I suppose I may mean “might be most useful for me to read,” but that seems a bit self-centred.)

Re: Beethoven's terminology?
Just to say that the Bingham String Quartet responded to Beethoven's instructions more or less as we have interpreted them in our discussion here when they gave an inspirational and enthusiastically received performance last night. As a footnote to that: I was a little concerned that a 'tough' quart...

Re: [puzzle] Slur solutions 1
The second measure shows what I have always considered to be centered slur tips: the tangent to the end of the slur runs through the middle of the note head. I was about to be dismissive along the lines of ‘does it really matter?’ but then when I look properly, I very much prefer the principle of t...

Re: [puzzle] Slur solutions 1
For what it's worth (not much, perhaps) I don't feel much distaste for slurs (and certain other things) crossing accidentals (and again, certain other things). There seems to me to be a world of difference between crossing and colliding. If a dynamic and an accidental were to collide, both might be ...

I'll report back on any relevant comments from the members of the Bingham String Quartet http://www.binghamquartet.net/ during rehearsal.

Extreme dynamics
This has been covered a little before on this forum, but looking at the score of Ligeti's violin concerto, for which OCTO provided this link http://www.schott-music.com/shop/resources/perusal_score_files/153622/MDS_153622.pdf in another thread, I was struck by the extreme dynamic markings. eg ffffff...
