What does this symbol mean?
In a professionally done big band chart. Piano and a Guitar chart, with the Guitar highlighted. In parenthesis it says GUIT and then the mystery symbol. I don't know how to type it. It's a very small circle which is underlined. This occurs a few times at the start of a section with a rehearsal mark....

Re: mercato and staccato
Feist defines maracto two ways 1) "slight accent, slightly short" and 2) "short, but not as short as a stacatto". Feist defines accent as "loud (or, sharp attack)". Roemer's definition maracto as "short and percussive" is closer to #1. Feist #1 isn't right for...

Re: mercato and staccato
I may be asking the wrong question. I just googled "marcato vs accent". The first two things to appear on my screen disagreed about the loudness, as follows: "A marcato is a type of accent that is played as loudly as the standard accent mark, but also staccato." And, " The m...

Re: mercato and staccato
Replies much appreciated! I want it particularly short. And loud. It's for jazz. Although my usual bassist and pianist are both classically trained as well. It will be read by keys, bass, drums, guitar and, often, a horn. If I put hat and dot in one chorus and just hat in the other -- will everybody...

Re: Am I too picky? (and I'm not that experienced, but there are limits!)
I'm not well educated in notation. I can read. I write for my own band. I sometimes write things that are clear to me and players play it correctly, but an educated player may complain that it's not correct. That is, despite everyone reading it correctly, it's still wrong. Am I not being picky enoug...

mercato and staccato
I make no claim to notation scholarship. Jazz lead sheet. I wanted a quarter note to be emphasized and played short. That is, a hit. I wrote a hat with a dot under it. Mercato with staccato, if I'm using those terms correctly. My friend told me I didn't need the dot, that the hat (mercato) already m...

Re: notating a hit and hold
I ended up tying the last note in bar 1 to a dotted half in bar 2 and thence to a half note rest in bar 3. And, I did put in "tutti let ring". My colleague continues to object, stating "tutti let ring" is unnecessary. He may be right about that, but I left it in anyway. I think i...

Re: Specific chord voicings in a lead sheet
Thanks! Several good ideas that I hadn't thought of. I like the idea of the voicing, stemless, in parenthesis with text the first time "suggested voicing". I'll have to see if Musescore will let me move it all the way to the left while permitting the rest of the measure to be preserved. Pr...

Specific chord voicings in a lead sheet
I'm thinking about lead sheets for groove based music, mostly samba. Original tunes I want to specify exact chord voicings here and there -- without affecting the comping pattern. That is, I'm saying to the chord instrument player, "Use your rhythms, but with my voicings". If I write out t...

Re: notating a hit and hold
JJP, you bring up a couple of points I didn't consider. Thank you. 1. The rest in bar 2 need not be tied to the rest in bar 3. In fact, I think the way it would look is the tie doesn't quite touch the first rest (in bar 2) and there would not be a tie to bar 3. Sorry. I think I got that part wrong. ...
