I agree with your choice.
Most of centred beams in my experience are there due to spacing concerns and not forcibly for musical reasons.

Perhaps also because many things are edited manually. Sibelius can achieve a cleaner result than Finale with a lot of manual ed...

Just be careful that the endpoint of the slur doesn’t cross the ledger lines, otherwise the S-shaped solution is very good. Great point, @MalteM.
In this specific case I would put the hairpins below, since in the middle they would require too much fiddling with background erasing.
