Re: On Beaming

MJCube, Case 1. Posting the URL of a piece that is not in public domain everywhere IMSLP warns users that some pieces are not in public domain everywhere. I have no idea of the legality of posting the URL of a piece that is not in pubic domain internationally, since the link does not contain the war...

Re: On Beaming

IMSLP says that the work is public domain only in the US. I don't know whether that makes it OK for me to post on the internet which is international.

Any copyright experts out there?

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?

No apologies necessary, MJCube. I didn't feel you were denigrating my work, just pointing out some errors. I should have made it clear that I was illustrating what was in the edition with this example. Everything in the example is exactly as in the Peters (except those pesky precautionary sharps) an...

MJCube wrote: the 8-7-6 grouping is very interesting. I hadn’t noticed it before, and it makes perfect sense since arpeggiating upward in the LH is easier than downward. Your point about the keyboard technique involved is very perceptive. I had actually meant that it was easier to play because the L...

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?

MJCube, I have a confession to make, namely, that since I did the engraving of the example, I am the culprit who left off the parentheses (because I didn't consider them necessary since it was not the point I was making) and also missed the error in the first edition, even though it was corrected in...

Re: Xenakis

I assume you meant one page turn! :)

Around the Arnstein office we had a pet joke: "It must be a great piece: it has (the possibility of) great page turns!"

Another was: "This opera can't be any good: too many tremolos."

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?

cGilmore, thank you so much for your comment. Actually, while a dotted line might be helpful occasionally, I don't think that it is necessary here because keyboard players are so accustomed to and reliant on positional notation—maybe too reliant, because students sometimes use it as a crutch and can...

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?

Knut, you are very welcome. I agree most of your comments but didn't understand: "You're probably right that the most important misconception of the engraver is the grouping of the notes." I meant to say that the engraver seems to be following the composer's MS (which I would love to see) ...

Re: On Beaming

This is getting curiouser and curiouser. I found an example that does't use French Beams, but does use opaque beaming in couple of "problematic" areas side-by-side with normal beaming! Stravinsky 3 movements from Petroushka for piano (Edition Russe de Musique 1922, Reprinted Boosey 1947) I...
