Re: Finale Slur Settings
Knut, Sorry. I am not sure what you mean about the grace note settings. For want of anything better, I was using the Finale defaults which are (in EVPUs): 11 Start Point H: 0 V: -3 End Point H: -24 V: -3 12 Start Point H: 6 V: -4 End Point H: -12 V: -28 13 Start Point H: 8 V: 0 End Point H: -6 V: 48...

Re: Finale Slur Settings
Knut, what do you think of these changes? Smart Shapes>Smart Shape Placement>Slur> (in spaces) 3 Start Point H: 0.5 V: -.5 End Point H: -.5 V: -.5 4 Start Point H: 0.5 V: -.5 End Point H: -.5 V: -.5 5 Start Point H: 0.5 V: .5 End Point H: -0.5 V: .5 6 Start Point H: .5 V: -.5 7 Start Point H: .5 V: ...

Re: Posting non-PD music
The service that takes care of the NY Times Permissions and Licensing, PARS International, finally contacted me. The cost for posting the few paragraphs from the 50-year-old article would be $2900 A YEAR!

Re: Finale Slur Settings
Thanks, Knut. I will do some more experimentation with those specs tomorrow. It hasn't bothered me to start with the Finale Engraver Slur default, probably because that is all I've ever done. I tend to prefer starting from something preexisting and then modifying it. For example, I use scanning as m...

Re: Finale Slur Settings
OCTO., It would be wonderful if Wess gave his input. As you say, many slurs have to be adjusted by hand. If only this software were more sophisticated and had the categories that you mentioned. At least it needs to cover all the simple cases like two notes of opposite stem direction. Knut, you are v...

OCTO. wrote: 1. Fermatas = I see it as the composer's enjoyment in writing them wide (not intentionally to mean "wide"). Just the pen feels good and scratch well on the paper. I should also point out that the editor of the Wiener Urtext did not consider the extended slur of the fermata to ...

Re: Haydn’s Innovation
David, thank you so much for sharing that. I have been involved in premieres with composers like yourself with whom it was a pleasure to work; but also with up-tight composers (often in their formative years) who have made everyone's life miserable with their constant carping. This is definitely not...

Finale Slur Settings
(Repost: I found errors in the settings in the attached files and in the body of this post immediately after posting last night, so please use the settings in this post and attached files:) After many years of adjusting Finale slurs, I decided recently to try to find settings that would give me good...

Re: Haydn’s Innovation
DatOrganistTho, I think that the best way to address your questions is with the following statement. I hope it covers everything. I am an idealist (in the philosophical sense) and think that great pieces of music like this Haydn sonata are ideal objects that exist outside of time and space, so that ...
