Re: Beethoven Brainteaser 3
I obviously can't let go of this. I'm thinking about registers and dynamics. In ms. 17-24 a pp is prescribed. But, without clef changes, the left hand enters a low register while the right hand moves upwards and thickens with chords in m. 21. It would be tempting to, not to say difficult not to, sta...

Re: unison wih different value noteheads, question
It is instantly understood, however. Maybe, and maybe not. An experienced reader might possibly trip over this and wonder if something out of the ordinary is intended. Another point is that the extra accidental might appear too didactic, not trusting the musician to understand what's self-evident. ...

Thanks for your reply, John. Beethoven's Diabelli variations IS an enigmatic work.

Re: Beethoven Brainteaser 3
Two more thoughts. Firstly: John, in many of your very instructive posts on Beethoven you have pointed out how conscious and careful he was about notation. Do you think it all likely that he would have just missed something like this - in the MS, in the first edition ? (Did he proofread the 1st ed.?...

Re: Beethoven Brainteaser 3
This is the actual left-hand melody in the published example, without the unnecessary clef change in m. 21 (unnecessary because the notes after it are actually lower than in the preceding measures; already this fact makes it questionable). Diabelli 1.PNG This a personal reflection, but I think the r...

Re: Dorico development issue
... the problem is you can find examples of almost anything in print. I know I've had to read some absolutely horribly engraved music before. With the notation books at least someone has given some amount of coherent thought to their choices, whether I agree with them or not. My turn to agree. If D...

Re: Dorico development issue
The important thing is: are you able to configure Dorico to produce the style that you want? Anyone who has read more than a few scores will know that custom and practice in notation varies across publisher, country, genre, and age. Personally, I'd hope that global communication would facilitate an...

Re: unison wih different value noteheads, question
I think this is analogous to the basic rule that an accidental is valid throughout a measure.
