Re: Finale 27's fonts: a handy guide

Hmm. The documentation claims that Finale Broadway Legacy Text, Finale Ash Text and Finale Jazz Text are "SMuFL-compliant versions" of the old text fonts -- yet they contain NO SMuFL characters whatsoever. Not even accidentals for titling and instrument names. Finale Broadway Text contains...

Finale 27's fonts: a handy guide

Just thought I'd talk through the fonts that come with Finale 27, particularly the 'Text' fonts. The SMuFL-compliant music fonts are: Finale Maestro (2729 glyphs), Finale Engraver (535), Finale Legacy (415); and Finale Jazz (689), Finale Broadway (428), Finale Ash (298). (Finale Legacy is the new na...

Re: Lyric font size?

If you haven't already, you may want to download the Finale 27 demo. Finale Lyrics has been updated (now v2.3), and may contain more glyphs (275) than previously.

Re: A Swedish Song From 1903

A simple experiment is to print out the page, put it on a music stand and step back to see what you see the best. In a good score you see always everything the best, or at least all equally well. That reminds me of an old rule in UK book design: the title of a book should be designed so that when i...

Re: Lyric font size?

I'd say that your size matches well to my collection of songs, mostly 1950s and earlier. It could be smaller, with little loss of clarity, but it's not too big. Songs tend to have lyrics larger than choral scores, or concert works or operas. Of course, the typeface itself is crucial, as some typefac...

Re: A Swedish Song From 1903

I think the lyric text size is slightly too big. The two lines are a bit cramped, and reducing them slightly would give them more space, and also affect the note spacing less.

Re: Advice on duplets, 9/8

Actually, the more I get into this, the more confusing it gets. We've had several bars of 8 semiquavers in one compound beat. Then we have 4 quavers in the space of 3 quavers - which is actually the same note duration as the 4 semiquavers in a duplet :???:  Screenshot 24.png However, because it...

Re: Finale: Creating linked part staves from a single staff

This is of course something Dorico handles with ease: create two separate Players for the Flutes, and use the Score Condensing feature to show them on one staff in the score.
Then create a new Layout with both Flutes for the part.

Thanks, John. It's good to know where the balance lies here!

Re: Advice on duplets, 9/8

Thanks, David.

There's not much more of bar 3. The voice, above, has dotted minim, dotted crotchet. I'm wondering whether that first chord should hold while the left hand plays.
