Re: First engraving project with Dorico

That's much better. It is a shame that you had to go to 6 pages and with many pages with only 4 systems on a page, which, as I mentioned, is a little awkward in terms of empty space. Widening the distance between the treble and bass clefs often helps in such situations. I am attaching a suggested wa...

Re: First engraving project with Dorico

That's a lot better, although I myself would prefer 5 or fewer measures per system throughout as possible. I guess we can agree to disagree about the breath marks. The page numbers now look a little big to me. As I mentioned, measures in which the right hand part has a dotted half note make good pag...

Re: First engraving project with Dorico

Hi John, thank you for your very detailed response, and I hope you feel better soon. Thank you! 1. I think the problem is that the cadenza bars are taking a lot of space and I think the numbers of bars and systems on most of the pages is about right. So what if I were to create a page break at m. 1...

Some remarkable engraving

I think that the following examples from the first edition of the second movement of Beethoven's piano sonata op. 10 no 2 show remarkable sensitivity on the part of the engraver, which is possibly influenced by the lost autograph. In the first example we are directed visually to a specific interpret...

Re: About designing a score cover (Henle blog).

Henle's covers remind me of memorial slabs in a mausoleum. I prefer interesting covers that reflect the living music inside.

Re: Resized staff/note and line thickness

What a great point. I agree. Reducing the thickness of the staff lines and stems gives a less substantial appearance and is harder to read. Perhaps you should make your point over at the Dorico forum, where Daniel will be sure to see it.

Re: octave line question

Passages like that are conventionally notated so that the beaming, as well as the stem direction, shows the separate hand groups:
