Re: Looking for commentary on some of my work

I'm also still unclear what criteria you are using for cautionary accidentals. For example Cantus m4 has a D natural when there is no altered D previously in the part. I would sometimes add a cautionary for a cross-relation in another part, but you didn't add a D natural for m4 in the Altus even th...

Re: Looking for commentary on some of my work

Here's the latest version with more spacing, a more readable measure number font, and added cautionary accidentals in line with current overall guidelines. In regards to the lyric extenders, I'm aiming to avoid what I see as overuse of extenders (the following VW example from OUP, and is at least Ca...

Re: Looking for commentary on some of my work

What I see looking at the Breitkopf edition of this piece (freely available on IMSLP) is that my staves are not too dense but the lyrics should be closer to the stave itself. It seems like slightly more spacing, along with moving the lyric line slightly closer to the stave in question, should do the...

Re: Looking for commentary on some of my work

I'm contemplating enlarging the staves themselves. I like the current appearance without too much white space within the systems (I feel that most modern engraving is far too spaced out) but definitely see your point about the inter-system spacing. Is this any better to your eyes? I moved the system...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 6

I would either follow your interpretation or just outright slur from the first beat. Slurring from the second beat indeed makes less sense when put into context as you have done.

Re: Middle-line stem direction

Indeed, John. I initially believed it was because of computer defaults, but Ross' pre-computer reference is seemingly strict on the subject, as well as many late-20th century computer- and hand-engraved scores. Also would be interesting to find out why some publishers have a preference for upstems a...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 5

It's a hard call, but I do ever-so-slightly err on the side of 1 in this case, not because of its particular legibility but because of the lack thereof with the other two. 2, in my mind, doesn't follow the melody and is too far from the notes to aid legibility, while 1 is the only option that seems ...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 5

I agree with Christof - your reasoning is perfectly sound but I feel the slur will just get lost in the stems and barlines unless it's, say, made unusually heavy in comparison.

Re: Looking for commentary on some of my work

Here is version two with the following changes as per your recommendations: - More space between title and music/composer name. - Bracket removed - the StaffGroup used was causing the spacing issues pointed out by harpsi. Until I know of a way to correct that within LP the bracket will not be used. ...

Re: Middle-line stem direction

...that the stem direction of a note on the middle line varies depending on the melody direction. ... You mean in a certain, algorithmic way? Or trying to avoid too much flipping of stems? What I perceived so far is: generally draw those stems downwards. In vocal scores draw them generally upwards....
