Re: More Dorico updates!

This is an awesome update, which complete clears the obstacles to my 'full' adoption of Dorico. Automatic Flow Headers in the middle of pages; Auto Tacet instructions for Players not in the Flow; Da Capo repeats; and complete control over Brackets; plus MIDI Transcribing; and a whole heap of product...

Re: Beauty in a digitalised world of music copying

If we have "Human Playback" with randomised adjustments for a more 'imperfect' and less robotic ensemble, might we not have "Human Engraving", where random alterations are made? My family comes from a long line of draftsmen, and I recently found some early practice-books of Coppe...

Re: Hairpin left edge vs. accidentals

She also says that the hairpin should end on the right side of the ending note. Strangely enough, her examples show something else: most end on the left side of the noteheads! It could be an error. I'd be surprised, even with the best editorial practices, if a book of that size and scope did not co...

Re: Finale update

As for the upgrade itself: increased speed and improvements in automatic placement and avoidance is to be welcomed. But there is still so much for MM to address. So many long-standing bugs and limitations in notation and positioning -- colliding notes; beam over barlines is still a 'work around'; tu...

Re: Finale update

All from the version (2014?) where you could open newer files in older Finales there were no big problems with that, until now, I'm told. Actually, working with different versions of .musx has always had problems. There have been several new features introduced which get 'erased' by a round trip th...

And another one today, Dorico 2.1.20, which brings compatibility with Mojave.

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

Or just teach people to hold notes for the written duration unless expressly indicated otherwise! I have seen pencil markings of this kind: a horizontal arrow to the end of the note. (Given that we are generally talking about lengthier notes at the ends of phrases.) Though it's possible that this co...

Re: The shape of the crotchet rest

Yes, there's the 'backwards quaver' rest, the 'mirror z', as well as the modern squiggle. I've yet to find how/why the modern squiggle came about, let alone gained ascendency. I can only suppose that other rest forms are easily confused with other durations, and as the crotchet became the dominant b...
