A Checklist for Making Parts

Post by prokofiev »

The Checklist is provided through the courtesy of Daniel Lis.

composerstoolbox.com wrote: Parts should be:
  • Full of necessary and helpful information
  • Clear in the instructions given
  • Easy to read
  • Visually pleasing
  • Foolproof
In other words, the performer should barely notice your beautiful engraving job so that they can focus on the music they’re playing, and not how you conveyed the information on the page.

Interesting that he recommends non-italic bar numbers. Gould recommends italics, and I'm happy with that. However, I do go along with making them sufficiently large: they are sometimes too small in both parts and scores.

This should definitely be added there:

Check that every fermata is present in every part.

Yes, that one is extremely important, often missed!
