Yes that's right David. Name is Elina Makropulos (or maybe Ellian MacGregor?) .
"X" is come from short examples and analysis Michele Girardi book (sorry, not from original score!)

Well, it's difficult to say anything on the grounds of so patchy an information.

If it comes from an analysis, then it might mean that that the group is an instance of motive x or leitmotif x used throughout the piece.
