Ugly slurs

Have you ever seen uglier slurs?

(Actually, I have: see the same composer's Gnarly Buttons).

Heavens! Even to me (and I'm less fussy about looks than many - most? - on this forum) they look - er - not nice.

That is atrocious. I wonder if that was "insisted" on by the composer... Part of me thinks that it was, because a principled engraver would never let that slide.... "but the house always wins."
