bow marking question (strings)

Post by MichelRE »

with a long value note, when you want the performers to change from a down to an up bow without specifying any particular place in a measure (or measures), would you place parentheses around the bow markings? or just place the down and the up side by side?

for example ( n v ) (the "n" here taking the place of an actual down bow articulation)

or simply placing n v above the first note?

I noticed that Gould has no parentheses in her examples. But I do recall seeing scores with this type of indication in parentheses.

Side by side over the first note, no parens needed.
