Notating a bar

Post by Hector Pascal »

Hi all,
I have composed this 9/8 bar of piano music. Am I on the right track in regard to its notation?
The top staff is treble clef and the bottom staff is bass clef. As for the slur and the crescendo, I squeezed them in, but am open to other positions.

I would remove the rests in the latter third of the measure as they add visual clutter and the beaming already conveys distribution between the hands.

Any reason for the small noteheads?

Great question. To avoid using a tuplet bracket, since I was assuming that a precise rhythm was really not to the point here and perhaps even undesirable. (If the composer desires an exact rhythm, he would use large notes and a tuplet bracket.) The notes are really a written-out arpeggio of voices "below" the final chord, whether or not the composer wants them held through with the pedal, and there is a tradition of writing out such arpeggios and roulades in small notes.

I can see the reason why the full-sized B flat in the left hand should be matched with an eighth rest in the right hand, but since the arpeggio shares both staves, is it necessary? It made me a little bit confused at first, I have to admit.

IMHO you need those hooks for hand distribution, the stem directions and beaming are clear enough.

The rest was troublesome to me too, Anders. I had considered making it a dotted eighth-rest, but that wouldn't be quite correct either. So if you find it confusing and are OK with leaving it out, that's good enough for me.

MaiteM, if you meant that the hooks are unnecessary, you may be right. If they are overkill it would be great to leave them out. I just wasn't completely sure that it was clear enough without them or r.h. and l.h. indications.
