Dorico for iPad

Post by benwiggy »

Dorico for iPad is now a thing! This is no cut-down reader, but a fully fledged app with (nearly) all the features of the desktop app.
And also some new features which will come to Dorico 4.

This is really funny considering how often people asked them in the past about an iPad app and they usually insisted that it was not something they would consider. Look what happened now!

Do you think this is spurred on by the switch to ARM?

Daniel responded on the forum about previous denials, saying "I may have been lying".

There's a very interesting blog post about the development back story on the Dorico Blog:
https://blog.dorico.com/2021/07/how-dor ... nes-story/

The timing of Sibelius and Dorico both releasing within a day of each other is nothing more than coincidence.

The forum pages of Dorico, Sibelius and Finale have frequently had posts asking/requesting "will there be an iPad version" over the years, so I'm sure it's a commercial imperative. (And now they're full of vocal posts saying "Well, I don't need it, so they shouldn't have done it.")

At the very least, neither Sibelius nor Dorico can point to the other and say "But only we have an iPad app". So each house must still be taken on its own merits.

Ah, yes, the nay-sayers; without them, there would be no comic relief to their picky attitudes. Beggars can't be choosers.

.... and Daniel has just announced that the limit on Player/staff numbers will be REMOVED in a forthcoming update. (For subscribers: the 2 or 4 limit still applies to the free app.)

There you go!

I guess for folks who really wanted it for iPad, they can have it all now.

It's also really fascinating to see that there are several features (for now) that are only available on the iPad and not the desktop version! Can't wait to see some of those things soon on the desktop version.

Yes, there are several 'Easter eggs' in the form of new features that can only be accessed if you setup keyboard shortcuts for them. This included "Music transformation tools", which the latest release notes say have been removed, and will be restored when D4 is released.

Also, a personal request that has been fulfilled in the iPad version is the ability to resize accidentals separately from the notehead. So now we can have accidentals small, square bracketed, parenthesised, and above the note. (Though the last is a bit of a workaround.)

There are also some improvements to slur and tie manual editing.
