Post by benwiggy »

The team have pulled out another maintenance update, with some tweaks to allow Finale users of Speedy Entry to feel more at home.

... and another: the 5.1.70 update.

Mostly bug fixes. Possibly of interest are a new option to play octaves transposing instruments at written pitch (I think :???:);

also the tuplet popover "self-populates" with 3, when appropriate, so you can just press Enter to get a triplet of the current note value.

yes, the possibility to enter notes on your MIDI keyboard where they are written is nice. It was annoying to always have to remember to play piccolo parts one octave up, or doublebass parts one octave lower.

the triplet thing is nice, not a HUGE time saver for me since it already pretty much did this before for the type of note entry I use.

Yeah, the octave thing had been one of my gripes for years. It always seemed completely inconsistent that I could enter an instrument that transposes at a 9th at written pitch, but not one that transposes at an 8th. Really happy to see this option! I already have a 3:2 tuplet shortcut hacked in, so that's sort of a non-issue for me, but it will save a keystroke for most I assume.

I do think it's nice for all the recent Finale converts to see what it's like to use a program that is in active development, listens to their users, and gives away incremental updates for free. This is now the 2nd free update since the mass influx of Finale users.

I have +/- octave buttons on my MIDI keyboard, and I'm constantly pressing them to set the relative octave. I play high Treble lines with my left hand at the bottom of the keyboard! I'm surprised it's such a big deal.

I'm itching to see what's in Dorico 6 -- though no doubt if it's too soon, we'll get people moaning that they have to pay again...

I use an 88 key controller, and prefer that the notes I enter be the ones that are notated.
I dislike using the octave shift button because it's quite far to my left at the end of the keyboard, and I also tend to accidentally leave it shifted to the wrong octave or accidentally pressed.

I have an 88 key keyboard at home, so it's not an issue there, it was just the incongruity of being able to enter what I see for every instrument, unless it was an octave transposing instrument, and then I needed to transpose. Entering at transposed pitch should be transposed pitch for all.
