oh my! John, your comment made me realize that the tempo marking is missing the "ca."
I've been playing with adjusting my parameters by your comments.
I'm trying some settings that minimize the slur shoulders somewhat. It's not unattractive.
and I've made the stems a tiny bit slimmer.
I've also adjusted the size of gradual and immediate tempo markings. they WERE a tiny bit too large.

by the way, the forum is acting up again with the "you've sent too many requests" message and blank pages showing up.

I like this more, particularly the slurs and the beams.Fred G. Unn wrote: ↑28 Jul 2025, 23:34 Here's a quick comparison with all my default settings:

I'm not super happy about the two slurs in the Violin that end up running along the top line so I would edit those. I'm trying out a new (to me this week) treble clef too as I'm bored with Bravura, but it might be a touch laid back. Other than selecting one fermata per staff I don't think I edited anything here.
This hosting is at NameCheap. I have heard that they had (not sure if still) numerous servers in Ukraine. Who knows. Sometimes it is blazing fast, sometimes I get this error. Time to move to another hosting!

the reason my numeric marking is in parentheses is simply because it's "circa - whatever speed" rather than "ideally at this speed".John Ruggero wrote: ↑29 Jul 2025, 17:14 Come to think of it, parentheses around metronome indications could be ambiguous. Without them, the marking seems to take on more force, as if the composer wants the music at that tempo and no other. Within parentheses they might seem to be more of a suggestion.
my problem as a composer is that I REALLY give a lot of freedom to the interpreters.
I'm not one of those

rather boringly traditional.

These are what I'm currently using:
staff lines: 1/7 spaces
ledger lines: 1/5 spaces
barlines: 4/25 spaces
stems: 1/6 spaces
I also beefed up my slurs
slur end: 1/10 spaces
slur middle: 1/4 spaces
staff lines: 1/7 spaces
ledger lines: 1/5 spaces
barlines: 4/25 spaces
stems: 1/6 spaces

@Hotboy.baritone
I'll look at your settings later and see how they compare to mine.
I might adopt thicker slur ends.
Years of having Finale's hyper-delicate slur ends have probably skewed how I see them.
meanwhile, our new adopted fur-daughter requires almost my complete attention at all times (she's sleeping right now, so I actually get to sit at my desk for a minute)
