Fingering on staff

Post by OCTO »

Should fingering that is placed on staff have erased background?

For a higher-contrast font such as you're using here (Old Standard TT Bold), then it may be useful because at these smaller sizes, the horizontal lines tend to fade away. A less contrasted font style with a bit more weight than the staff lines would be preferable so they stand out a little better if you intend to regularly put the fingering within the staff like this. Typically they're found outside the staff, but I realize there are reasons for doing it this way.

Dorico also erases the background when the fingering is set to "inside staff". This must be somewhat new to engraving, and a excellent innovation for any font that you might use.

A very good point, really I missed it! What other font do you recommend for fingerings? I prefer some older style.

OCTO, I changed my mind about the erase background option for fingering. When actually carried out for chords on the staff, for example, it creates many unattractive gaps in the staff lines.

I find the Maestro finger numbers at 12 pt to be excellent.
