G clef as ampersand!

I happened across this memorial in Worcester Cathedral, which uses what appear to be G clefs as ampersand symbols!

It wasn't particularly concerned with music or musicians, either!

I remember from times to times when my scores in Finale opened with all ampersands! :eek:
..now I got it!

It may be connected with the Shakespeare Authorship question. Notice the way the G clefs frame the word "canons", which obviously refers to a musical cypher of some kind. :)
