In other words, the performer should barely notice your beautiful engraving job so that they can focus on the music they’re playing, and not how you conveyed the information on the page.
Interesting that he recommends non-italic bar numbers. Gould recommends italics, and I'm happy with that. However, I do go along with making them sufficiently large: they are sometimes too small in both parts and scores.
