Fermata

Post by Hector Pascal »

Hi again,
The top stave uses a pause on the third dotted quarter beat. Have I used the pauses on the correct rests in the piano part (lower two staves)? I pondered on it today until I confused myself!

Cheers and thanks for any help!

The lower systems could function properly if the fermata landed on the ultimate note of the staff above. Nonetheless, it does not, which means that you must write the same rhythm and fermata to show that it doesn't end the measure. Usually, piano parts include other instruments, but if not, it can be challenging to interpret the fermata by simply looking at the two lower staves.

Dear Octo, Thank you very much for that explanation!
Here is my latest attempt.
Cheerio and thanks,
Hector.
PS: Indeed, the score will serve also as the piano part.

I think if the two staves below are one single instrument (piano), maybe you can use the whole measure rest with fermata. But keep the upper stave as it is.
Anyone else to jump in?

I think you are right, OCTO. A little less fussy that way.

Thanks, Octo and John. I wasn't able to find a detailed answer in Gould (p.190), so I have especially appreciated your input!

Cheers,
HP.
